Miriam by Mesu Andrews

“Miriam” is an imagining of the life of Miriam, the sister of Moses. It is the 2nd book in the “Treasures of the Nile” series. The first book is “The Pharaoh's Daughter.” I had not read the first book and was able to follow the story perfectly.

Most who know the bible know the story of Moses, of the plagues, of the first Passover, and of the exodus from Egypt made by the Jewish people. Mesu Andrews uses her novel to take you deeper into the story, using biblical knowledge with historical knowledge to make the story and it's characters really come to life. It's obvious that Mesu Andrews has taken the time to really research for her books and that adds a good depth to the story.

In Miriam we find a women who is strong in her faith, sure of her God, but also human. Miriam is a gifted midwife and healer, blessed with the gift of prophesy. She has a strong sense of what is right, and even when facing the Pharaoh she does what would honor God. She is the type of godly woman that one can admire and that I personally would love to be more like.

Historically, the book is fascinating. Reading Exodus you learn about the plagues, but never truly stop to think about the effects of them. The first few plagues effect the Hebrews and Egyptians alike. Through Mesu Andrews writing you get a better sense of how terrible it must have been. To learn about a loving but also vengeful God and then see his vengeance in action would be both horrifying and awe inspiring. The suffering brought on by the stubborn pride and hatred of one man, the Pharaoh, is astounding.

I've only recently become a fan of Biblical fiction, and stories like this one are why. It brings the bible, and it's events, in life and makes one really think about what they have read. I brings humanity to the characters we have read about and reminds us that if God can use them, God can use us. I fully recommend this book, and am so glad that I got to read it, especially in the weeks prior to Easter and Passover. If you like biblical fiction at all I fully recommend this book.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review from Blogging for books. My opinions are 100% my own.
